History of Philosophical and Scientific Though

The research area on the history of philosophical and scientific thought comprises around 20 professors, researchers, external collaborators, post-doctoral fellows and phd students.

Research is done in the history of philosophy both in its autonomous identity and in its relationships to the history of sciences (both mathematical natural sciences and life sciences) and to the history of medicine. The area comprises two research groups: one dedicated to ancient and medieval, the other to early modern and modern thought.

1. In the history of ancient philosophy the focus of our research is the philosophy of Aristotle and of the first generation of his disciples, from Theophrastus of Eresos to Strato of Lampsacus; the main themes are natural philosophy, logic, and metaphysics. Along the same lines the hellenistic philosophies, with special attention to Epicureanism and skepticism, are also studied. Theories on plants and botany are the focal point for studies in the history of ancient science and of its later developments. Also for the medieval period, the inquiry centres on the nature and characters of scientific knowledge: studies concentrate in particular on the medieval tradition of Aristotelian “Second Analytics”. Research into problems of scientific methodology have brought to concentrate on the tradition of the first book of “De partibus animalium”. Recently this line of research deals also with the second half of the 14th century and the developments of the Aristotelian tradition in some Humanistic authors.

2. The activity of the Research Group on the history of Early Modern and Modern philosophical and scientific thought (fMOD) spans from the 16th to the 20th century. The activities and the participants are presented in detail on the website (www.filosofia.unito.it/fmod). There are two current multi-year research projects: “Materialism and scientific naturalism in German 17th and 18th-century philosophy”, and “Philosophers and philosophy outside the professional and academic field, from the Early Modern to the Present time”. Among the main ongoing lines of research are Kantian and Neokantian Philosophy; Leibniz's Writings, Thought, and Intellectual Networks; History of Russian Philosophy; History of Analytic Philosophy; 19th Century Non-Algebraic Logics and Foundational Theories. An yearly Seminar on Early Modern and Modern Philosophy has been the first activity of the Group. It is deployed formally at the master level, but the participants include Ph.D. students and post-docs.
