Ontology, new hermeneutics, analytical aesthetics

Relying on an important tradition of the University of Turin, the DEF promotes an intense research activity in the field of ontology and hermeneutics, which is articulated in the areas of social ontology, new hermeneutics and philosophical realism, the theory of perception, philosophy of art, analytical aesthetics, philosophy of the web and Renaissance philosophy.

Open to both the analytical and the continental methodology, the research of Ontology and Hermeneutics takes place at the Labont (Laboratory for Ontology, founded in 1999), whose members include 10 professors and researchers of Turin and other Italian and foreign universities as well as numerous postdoctoral fellows and graduate students.

Within the network of institutions coordinated by the Labont, special attention goes to the CTAO (Interuniversity Centre for Theoretical and Applied Ontology, founded in 2002), the “Paolo Bozzi” Prize for Ontology (instituted in 2011) and The ‘Jacques Derrida / Law and Culture’ International Chair of Philosophy (instituted in 2014).

The researchers of the Labont participate in the "FINO" PhD programme, which is part of the Graduate School in Humanities at the University of Turin and the School of Advanced Studies of the University of Turin-Ferdinand Rossi. There is also a permanent Labont seminar (founded in 2013), which regularly hosts visiting professors and researchers from several Italian and international universities.

In addition to numerous international publications, the research of the Labont members is published in the Rivista di estetica (Journal of Aesthetics, founded in 1956, classified as level "A" by the Ministry of University, indexed by: ISI, SCOPUS, The Philosopher’s Index), and the series “Ontologia” (founded in 2000), “Estetica Analitica” (founded in 2010), “Nuovo Realismo” (founded in 2013), Minimaphilosophica (founded in 2014).
