Theoretical Philosophy, Aesthetics and Hermeneutics

The researches in the area “Theoretical Philosophy, Aesthetics, and Hermeneutics” at DFE, are grounded in a long- and well-established tradition of internationally recognized studies; its most prominent representatives are Luigi Pareyson and Gianni Vattimo. The research area focuses on the tradition in classical continental philosophy, first of all Plato, Aristotle, classical German philosophy until phenomenology, existentialism and hermeneutics, 20th century French philosophy, with attention also to the most recent developments and movements.

Particular emphasis is given to studies in metaphysics, to the philosophy of economics and the environment, philosophy of life, of translation, and of cultural identities, as well as to debates in Modern and Postmodern philosophy, to the philosophy of the image, to cultural and visual studies, and to philosophy and ontology of art.

Professors and researchers of Theoretical Philosophy, Aesthetics, and Hermeneutics collaborate with research centers, that encourages the development of research within its areas of interest; among these are Centro Studi Filosofico-Religiosi “Luigi Pareyson”, which also organizes the Scuola di Alta Formazione Filosofica, the CIRM (The Center for Interuniversity Reaserch in Morphology “Francesco Moiso”); and Cespec (Center of Studies in Contemporary Thought).

Among publications, the following journals should in particular be mentioned: "Annuario Filosofico", “Filosofia e Teologia”, “SpazioFilosofico”, “Tropos. Rivista di ermeneutica e critica filosofica”.

Closely associated to the field of research are, furthermore, the activities of several professors in the “The International Chair of Critical Hermeneutics”. In addition, the area is involved in numerous international collaborations with foreign Institutions and Universities; it also facilitates exchanges between professors as well as Erasmus students.
