Communication and Media education

This research area includes a broad spectrum of scientific interests and methodological approaches, at the intersection between communication and education sciences. It considers the media like a learning resource for all persons.

The interdisciplinary group converges towards the media education studies and, in fact, it has also the aim to produce in-depth analysis of the new forms of contemporary culture. Moreover, it analyzes, evaluate and plans educational activities that consider the profound changes in the social and communicative environment of the recent past.

It also promotes various forms of media education planning in school and on the territory, a culture of documentation (paper and digital) of experiences and good practices, a timely and systematic learning process observation and a skills oriented evaluation approach.

The scientific and operational interests so, aim to research and experimentation in the most advanced communication and education fields, with a particular attention to the digital media and web 2.0 impact, in continuity with the traditional media.

The research projects are conducted and developed in collaboration with institutions, local authorities, media production companies, editorial group, publishing sectors, associations, universities and research centers laying stress in particular on the territory needs and internationalization aspects.

For this purpose, this section uses different tools of: experimental pedagogy, sociology of media, sociology of education, teaching and learning technologies, theories and techniques of writing, up to involve the anthropology of media and theatrical animation knowledge.

The scientific projects carried out and the prevailing research interests focus on the following topics:

  • children and adolescents "media diets" analysis: from the mass media to social media;
  • evaluation of the media curricula impact in schools;
  • MER – Mediaeducational Research (effective media education theories and practices)
  • Advanced use of new technologies for teaching and special education (DSA and BES)
  • Quantitative and qualitative analysis of media content (es. television format and genres analysis, TV programs for children analysis, etc.)
  • Media literacy and empirical research on digital and media skills
  • ICT and social media in learning environments
  • Sustainability and inclusion in relation to media technologies
  • Cyberbullying
  • Gamification
  • New frontiers of E-learning of (es. MOOC)
  • Digital storytelling and transmedia storytelling
  • eBooks and new learning environments
  • Social enterprise and Educator 2.0
  • educational and communicative research for the mediaeducational start-up and social businesses
  • cultural and social animation.
  • Writing and media production


Many of the items above are based on researches already completed, in progress and still in the design phase and in perspective. Some of the activities indicated, moreover, are based on ten years of research and production in television field (ExtracampusTv) and on the new interdepartmental research center CinEduMedia (DFE).
