Moral Philosophy

The research area on moral philosophy comprises scholars interested in the so-called practical philosophy, i.e. the reflection on different dimensions of human action. Ethics is therefore examined in its various aspects, starting from those concerning more general and abstract issues pertaining to general ethics, to those more specific which are nowadays the concern of peculiar disciplines such as the philosophy of history, bioethics, applied ethics or philosophy of religion. Some of these disciplines may end up in dealing with some political issues.

Research in general ethics is mostly aiming at developing a philosophical program of critical idealism in postmodern culture. On the other hand, research on specific issues are going in different directions: in philosophy of history it aims at developing a critical theory of society and at an analysis of political evil’s pathologies; in bioethics it is focused at examining various issues concerning life and death (abortion, euthanasia, assisted reproduction, stem cells research, transplants, etc.) in the light of utilitarian theories and mixed deontological ones; in applied ethics attention is devoted to philosophical practice, in its different ways of application (e.g. philosophical counseling, Sokratisches Gespräch, P4C, café-philo, etc.). Research on the religious is dealing mainly with the relationships between religion and sacred and religion and sacrifice in order to understand how religion can influence moral life.
