Moral philosophy

page being updated

The research area of moral philosophy brings together scholars from various sectors of practical philosophy, as a reflection that concerns action in its many dimensions. Ethics is declined in its various modalities, from those concerning the broader and abstract questions of general ethics to the more specific ones subject to particular disciplines such as the philosophy of history, bioethics, applied ethics or the philosophy of religion, which sometimes border on the more theoretical aspects of politics.

As regards research in general ethics, the prevailing line concerns the development of the philosophical program of critical idealism in postmodern culture. The most particular researches range in different directions: in the philosophy of history they are mostly directed to the elaboration of a critical theory of society and to the analysis of the pathologies of political evil; in bioethics the various questions about birth and death are examined (abortion, euthanasia, assisted fertilization, stem cells, definition of death, transplants, etc.) in the light of utilitarian or mixed ethical theories; in applied ethics, attention is paid above all to individual and group philosophical practices (philosophical counseling, Socratic dialogue, P4C, café-philo, etc.), in their different contexts of application. Finally, there is no lack of analyzes aimed at the nature of religion, the relationship between religion and the sacred and between religion and sacrifice, to clarify how religion influences the moral dimension of life.
